Super Troopers Programme
On Tuesday pupils from 5th & 6th Class walked to SuperValu in Lanesborough to participate in a Nutri– Safari, as part of the Super Troopers Programme.
Firstly, we met the dietician at the fruit & vegetable aisle and we had a discussion on the food pyramid. She said the recommended amount of fruit & vegetables to eat each day was 7 portions.
We got to sample strawberries, blueberries and pineapple.
Next we walked to the bread section where we looked at different types of bread and decided which were the healthiest. We also looked at the dairy section and sampled some cheese. Across from this were the cereals. We were shown how to examine food labels to check how much sugar in each product. We were amazed that so many of our favourite cereals had so much sugar! It is better to buy and eat food that has less than 5g of sugar per 100g. We were shocked too that lots of our favourite yoghurts had high levels of sugar.
Lastly, we visited the meat counter and identified many types of meat and fish. We learned that it is good to eat oily fish such as salmon, mackerel or trout, at least once a week.
To finish we had a quick quiz and then we were all given goodie bags to take back to school as well as a participation certificate.
We really enjoyed our trip to SuperValu!
