Yesterday we visited the Convent of Mercy, Roscommon for Science Week.


Firstly, we went into the Home Economics Room and discussed the use of raising agents in Food Science.  We Learned that a raising agent is something that makes bread and other food rise.  There are 4 different raising agents - air, bread soda, baking powder and yeast.


We then used yeast to blow up a balloon.  Yeast produces carbon dioxide, the carbon dioxide then expands and rises when heated.


Next we used bicarbonate of soda to make honeycomb.  Bicarbonate of soda is an alkali.  When mixed with an acid it produces carbon dioxide.


After this we moved onto the Science Room.  We did lots of interesting experiments including making a rocket from Alka-Seltzer tablets and water, putting a skewer through a balloon without bursting it, making a flour explosion and creating dry ice bubbles.


To finish up we watched a video clip about all the activities that the Convent of Mercy are involved in.  We had a most enjoyable day participating in all the activities and we got a treat also on the way home.
